Paint Chip Projects

The other day I stole into Home Depot to sneak out with a handful of paint chips. I was sure that security would stop me, but I was able to walk out with no questions asked. After winning a little notebook in Deb’s giveaway, I wanted to make a similar one from a paintchip like the one I saw on WhiMSy Love’s blog. Then Etsy started its Share Your Love initiative asking for Valentine’s cards to distribute among the recipients of Citymeals-on-Wheels. Since I had just stumbled across a paint chip card tutorial on Go Make Something, I decided to make some paint chip Valentine’s cards. That left me with one sample card. In researching this post, I found this paint chip business card tutorial by Aaron Tang.

Notebook

For the mini notebook I used a 3″ by 7″ paint chip and folded the bottom edge over by 3/4.” 2.5″ from the top I made another fold and then added a final fold at 2.75″ from the top to form a 1/4 inch spine. To fill the note book I cut up some scrap paper into roughly 2.75″ by 3″ pieces. Because I tried to fill the booklet with too many pieces of paper, I couldn’t use a stapler. Instead I attached the paper by sewing it to the bottome of the notebook edge. The seam was a little unsightly and I ended up covering it with a button.

Business Card Holder

The business card holder tutorial was very clear and came with a great template for 3.5″ by 2″ business cards. I just had to adjust the image slightly to fit my 5″ by 6″ paint chip. To do this, I copied the image of the template into Photoshop and adjusted the size to 476 pixels by 559 pixels.

Valentine’s Cards

Valentine’s cards are obviously very straightforward. Take a paint chip and knock yourself out. I glued origami paper to the back of the card with rubber cement in order to cover up the print on the back. If you want to participate in the Etsy card drive, you can find the instructions here. They have a goal of delivering 18,000 cards on Valentine’s Day. The deadline to submit a card is February 2nd.

Notebooks

Why can’t I just throw my waste paper into the recycling bin like everyone else? So there I was, Saturday evening trying to dig out my desk and as I looked at the growing stack of paper I thought, “Didn’t I just see something, somewhere about making little notebooks?” So I folded the 8 1/2 sheets in half and then my gaze fell on some freebie postcards I had picked up from a rack at a restaurant. “Hm, these would make good covers.” So here they are: Two little notebooks made from last week’s proposal and tied up with some packing twine. Perfect for a few rounds of hangman while waiting for swim class to start. By the way, the PTA minute drafts are starting to look like a nice stack for the next notebook. . .

Business Card Alternatives

With the approach of the holiday fair season, I’m contemplating business card alternatives to promote my crafting business. Since I “make stuff,” I prefer the promotional item to be handmade. However, the time and material cost invested can’t be too involved. So here are some things I’m considering.

Right now my favorite is one of these little matchbook notebooks. They are cute and seem to be relatively inexpensive. WhiMSy Love has a tutorial on a variation that uses paint chips for the cover, but you could really use any kind of sturdy paper.

Another possibility are these glass chip magnets. I just don’t know if they would be cost effective.

This is actually the paperweight size, but you get the idea. The other drawback is that the magnet’s weight will increase shipping costs should you include one with a purchase. But it might be a fun idea for a hosted sales party.

A lighter option is a bookmark. Something like this:

I could stamp my etsy URL on the back. I would probably leave out the lamination just to save costs.

I also like these key chains. With an embroidery machine I could sew my URL on them. However, since that is still on my wish list of things to buy when the recession is over, I’ll have to stencil, silkscreen, or stamp the link on it by hand.

Forum discussions have also mentioned stickers. While definitely a low cost option, I have to admit that I don’t really get that idea. Maybe because my house is inundated with dinosaur, Sponge Bob, and fairy stickers already.

This is a selection of promotional custom items I found on etsy:

What do you think about promotional objects? Do they warrant the investment?

By the way, the bookmark and the magnets were made by participants in the Crafty Daisies Book Club. The next virtual meeting is on October 22 to review Lotta Prints.
