This year, our family will go the homemade advent calendar route instead of the toy-filled storebought version we usually get from Oma and Opa. Here are some designs I’m contemplating:
Last year’s Little Birdie Advent Calendar by Skip to my Lou:
The sleek and clean modernist calendar by Sarah Neuburger of The Small Object:
This extremely elegant calendar (scroll down to 12/17/08) by Miss Gioia:
Although the thought of sewing on 300 buttons is a bit daunting.
Then there is this tiny little chewing gum calendar by My Little Mochi:
And finally, Sibylle suggested this Quilted Calendar designed by Elizabeth for SewMamaSew:
What do you think? Do you have a favorite design you’d like to share?

Oh the GUILT!! Three years ago, I bought a felt Advent calendar kit at the craft store. It was 50% off, and I had a few months to finish it. Easy peasy, right?
*ahem*
It’s still not done. It’s similar in design to Ms. Fransson’s up there, but it’s felt…and each little pocket-ornament is hand embroidered, and embellished with beads and sequins. I bought it because it was the same style as the stockings my grandmother made for my sister and I when we were babies…but now I see why Myrnie and I are the only two (out of 5 kids in our family) to have those stockings. It’s so FUSSY. Last year, I resorted to using tacky glue around Thanksgiving, and I STILL couldn’t finish by December 1. This year, with Grabby Hands around, I didn’t even pull out the bag. Maybe next year…
And HOW would I convince a 3 year old to eat only one piece of gum a day? LOL (Although, since Christmas will be “away” this year, that might be a good idea…)
My next-door-neighbor just brought an advent calender over today for my son! Cardboard with little doors filled with German chocolates…just like she does every year! That’s my kind of advent calender!
I love those little birds though…hmmmm. You may have done it to me again!
I love them ALL! I don’t know how I would ever make a decision. But, my kidlets would most likely love the birds.
ooh, these are all fabulous. I plan on going the handmade route too this year. Decisions, decisions. I’d like to do something that nobody else has, but what that will be I have no idea yet. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
