A Cheetah, a Lion, a Clown , Oh My — Halloween Costumes

It’s the season again, in August I bought the fabric for this year’s costume and now I only have a few more weeks to get started on it. Luckily I’ll be able to follow my usual method of modifying an existing pattern for a one-of-a-kind costume.

I based my daughter’s first Halloween costume on a basic toddler romper pattern, something along these lines:

With the addition of a ruffled collar, a hat, and a large pompon the clown was created.

The following year she wanted to be a lion. Does this pattern look familiar? This time I made a lion’s mane by looping yarn over a toilet paper roll and sewing it to the collar and added a tail with a little tuft at the end.

The next years brought along a store-bought fairy and Supergirl, but by last year my talents were back in demand. For the cheetah costume I modified the jacket and pants of this pattern

by adding a tail to the pants and some ears to the hood. My daughter insisted on the pink bits for the ears.

This year, after pouring over a list of 100 plus Pokemon, we agreed on the Sneasel, an ice-type pokemon

I’m planning on using the same jacket and pants pattern with a bright pink feather boa for the tail and the feather ear. Only 23 days to go. I’ll keep you posted.

    Awesome, clever costumes.

Last year my son wanted to be a black widow spider so I modified a pattern to fit that request (had to add extra legs, an hourglass, extra eyes and fangs to be anatomically accurate). The previous year he wanted to be a cardinal. I modified a pattern for that, too. Results are here:

This year he wants to be a mummy! As I type, I’m setting some tea dye to the harem cloth that I’m using on his costume.

    I love making costumes!

These are amazing! One of the things I have always hated most about store bought costumes is how thin they are. All of the kids have chocolate ringed blue lips. These look so warm!. In the past we have modified little sweat pants and shirts, but they just looked like modified sweat suits. I am comfortable doing decor sewing, but I am just learning to sew clothing. While it may be a little late for this year, you have inspired me to try one for next year!
