Etsy Love

Lately I’ve been spending a lot more time on my Etsy shop and have received some love in return.
Here’s Outrechic’s treasury of UpCycled Chic where she included my Executive Handbag made from an upcycled men’s suit.

Laura Trevey, a watercolor artist and author of the Bright, Bold and Beautiful blog, graciously included my new wallet in her list of Beautiful Things

And Sunshineandshowers also included this wallet in her treasury entitled Where is the Love?

Thank you for all this love. It’s been a great week

Eco Tags

As the spring season is about to kick off, I thought I’d take a stab at redesigning my hang tags. In the past I’ve just used my business cards, but since I will be participating in the eco-themed Spring Handmade Cavalcade, I decided to add another recycling touch to my wares.

For these tags I recycled a pasta box

by punching out two-inch circles,

stamping my store name onto the tag,

adding an eyelet,

and tying one on.

You could also use them as gift tags, name tags, wine charms, key identifiers. . .

Any other ideas?

Stockings - A Tutorial

So you made yourself a felted sweater bag and still have two sleeves left? Turn them into Christmas Stockings!

Materials:

  • Felted Sweater Sleeves
  • Paper to make a pattern
  • Embellishments: Buttons, patches, embroidery thread, felted objects. . .
  • Optional: Bias Tape

How To:

Cut the sleeves from the sweater along the shoulder and the arm seam. Steam the sleeve flat and trace its outline on the pattern paper.

Within that outline on the pattern paper trace the shape of a boot. That is your pattern.

Cut out a right and a left boot. In other words, cut out one boot, turn the pattern over and cut out the second boot on the second sleeve. When you put the two halves together, the left sides should be touching.

From the remainder of the sleeve, cut out a 8″ x 1.5″ strip. This will become the loop to hang up the stocking.

Now it’s time to embellish the stocking. For the red stocking I raided my vintage button collection to create a button snow storm. The heel is decorated with a needle felted star.

The black stocking is decorated with a patch that I embroidered with a picture of my husbands vintage land cruiser. You could add appliques, yoyos or just leave it plain.

When you’re ready, put the two halves together with right sides touching and sew a seam around the stocking. I covered the seam with bias tape, but that step is optional.

The original ribbing of the sleeve provided the edging on the red stocking. For the black stocking I sewed a blanket stitch around the top.

Fold the strip in half and sew the loop in place on top. This one is again finished with a blanket stitch, but that is entirely up to you.

I’d love to see your variations on this theme.

Whirlwind Week

Well, it’s been a whirlwind week. Today I dropped off a batch of bags at 93 Nevins Street. My Etsy team scored a pop-up retail space as part of this year’s Atlantic Avenue Art Walk. If you happen to be in Brooklyn this weekend, do check out this event. It’s a self-guided tour of open artist studios and area exhibitions along Atlantic Avenue. 93 Nevins Street stood empty for 20 years until two Brooklyn developers decided to transform the space into two townhouse residences that were as green as possible. In keeping with the theme, artists with environmentally friendly products will participate the team store. Here are some of the products you may find:

Summer Wardrobe Refashion

I’ve been toying with the idea of repurposing my husband’s shirt and started cutting up this one in this season’s orange. (Went to PTA meeting the other day, everyone was wearing orange. Funny how fashion colors suddenly penetrate the landscape.)

My plan is to make a blouse (top row, left) based on New Look pattern 6808.

I removed the sleeves and the collar,

opened up the side and the shoulder seams, and sewed down the button facing. Then I laid down the pattern. This is the front and back with darts inserted.

I’m planning on cutting down the original sleeves to 3/4 length and embellishing the shirt further with red buttons and maybe some rickrack.

However, this will take a while because:

I was selected for a pop-up store collaboration between The {NewNew} Street Team and COlab Projects for the Brooklyn Atlantic ArtWalk NEXT WEEK. Yikes. Need to sew. Can’t hang out with my blogger and Tweeter friends. Panic sets in. . .

Etsy Scavenger Hunt & Giveaway

The last couple of days have been filled with Etsy business. I’ve finally restocked the store and actually sold something, I joined The {NewNew} York Etsy street team, and I’m having a scavenger hunt in my store. Participation in the scavenger hunt will put your name in the hat for these earrings. They are made out of  jade, amethyst and sterling silver, and yes, they would be No. 22 in my quest to design 99 pairs of earrings.

And here are the rules:

Little Red Riding Hood is hiding somewhere in my store groundsel.etsy.com.

If you find her, click the item she is associated with and copy the URL for that page into the body of an email that you send to mycraftevolution (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line Scavenger Hunt. I’ve thought of this whole rigmarole so the answer to the scavenger hunt doesn’t show up for everyone to see in the comment section.  I will draw the name of the winner on Wednesday, November 26th, the day before Turkey Day.

I hope this makes sense. Happy Hunting.
